Chapter 2 Summary
- Human anatomy has a long and distinguished
history, Hippocrates being considered one of the founders
of the study of anatomy.
- The human body can be studied and viewed
in a variety of different ways - from the surface, using
cadavers, through the microscope and as a result of high-technology
imaging.
- In anatomy and medicine, specific terminology
and planes are used to describe the body.
- The body is composed of a variety of tissue
types, including epithelial, connective and muscle tissues.
- The integumentary system covers the body
and, for example, protects, regulates and senses.
- The skeletal system comprises of cartilage,
joints and bones and provides support and points of attachment
for the skeletal muscles of the body.
- Synovial joints are of great interest
to sport and exercise science and the three main types are
ball, hinge and complex.
- The major muscles of the body act around
joints such as the hip, knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow and
wrist.
- There are about four hundred muscles
in the body, and about one hundred are of considerable interest
to the sport and exercise scientist.
